An introduction to the Gastro Intestinal Cancer Support Group by Janet Brazier, GICS President.
A very warm welcome to the GICS Group Website. Our group is for anyone - patients, their families, friends and caregivers - affected by gastro-intestinal cancers (oesophageal, stomach, pancreas and bowel). One of the great things about our support group is discovering you need not face problems alone; we have found that having access to real people who are going (or have gone) through a similar experience is invaluable.
GICS was originally set up in late 2009 by the GI Clinical Nurse Specialist team at Colchester General Hospital. In Feb 2010, at their suggestion, patients took over the running of the group, with a member of the GI clinical team attending each meeting. On behalf of GICS I would like to acknowledge the fantastic and continuing support of the specialist GI nurses and staff of Colchester General Hospital, one of whom always attends our monthly meetings.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month in the Training Rooms (South) at Colchester General Hospital. Meetings start at 6.30pm with an informal chat and refreshments when we discuss any issues, developments and business of the group. Around 20 people usually attend each meeting and there is a relaxed, friendly atmosphere - we aim to make everyone feel welcome.
Our members also represent patient views elsewhere. For example, some of us have taken part in staff appointments and NHS induction sessions and we have members who are involved in the activities of the Essex Cancer Network and the charities Beating Bowel Cancer and the Oesophageal Patients’ Association.
If you would like to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to meeting you!
